This is an idea I have had for years. I shared it one night at community small group, but I figured I should share here as well.
We use the word "worthy" for so many things. But do we fully mean it when we say? So often, we dilute words with hyperbole, until it no longer has meaning. We almost need new words, just to say what we meant before. But let's try to make this one true to its meaning.
When we say God is worthy of praise and worship, do we mean it? So often we say God is worthy because of what he promises. Or what we want from him. That's not "worthiness." Worthiness is an understanding that the person deserves it, simply for being who they are. God is worthy not because He gives us things, but because He is God.
If our sin separates us from God and no matter what, it could not be repaired, is God still worthy? If we are destined for Hell, no matter what can happen, is He still worthy? Would we praise God, even as He sentenced us to Hell on the Day of Judgement? If you can't say yes, then do you truly find him worthy?
Because that is what we deserve. Eternal punishment. Physical and spiritual death. And even deserving that, God deserves praise and worship.
When we understand that, the grace God gives us in restoring ourselves to Him feels so much greater. When we realize that we are indebted with such a great burden, that we could never hope to pay it in a thousand lifetimes, yet God wipes the slate clean, it should embolden us to live in such a way of praise and worship, that glorifies God in such a magnificent way.
God is worthy. Remember that. But live that as well.
